Section A: General Questions:
1. What is the GreatGiftRegistry.com?
The Great Gift Registry is a completely new concept in gift registries. By combining the convenience of the internet with the service and variety of local shops we have created the ultimate gift registry service.
2. What makes the GreatGiftRegistry.com unique?
The Great Gift Registry has been designed for small to medium sized businesses that would be otherwise unable to offer their own registry. By bringing together dozens of stores from thousands of communities the consumer is provided with a huge selection of unique gifts. Locally owned stores are provided with a exceptional opportunity to showcase their service and products, and to compete in a market normally reserved for mega retailers.
Traditionally, gift registries have only been available at large department stores. Recently, many gift registries have sprung up that are entirely internet based. The Great Gift Registry incorporates the best aspects of both kinds of registries. You get the personal service of a store based registry, the convenience of having your list accessible from the internet, plus you get access to the unique styles common to smaller stores.
3. How does the GreatGiftRegistry.com work?
The person(s) creating a list start by filling out a registration form with login ID and password. Then, by visiting our affiliate stores they create a list of items to add to their online registry list. The gift giver can then view the list online, choose a gift to purchase, and proceed to the store where the gift is found . The store will then supply a "purchase confirmation #" so the gift giver can remove their gift from the registry list.
4. Can I really register gifts from any store I like?
You can register from any store affiliated with the Great Gift Registry. If there is a store not affiliated with our service that you would like to register with, simply let us know, and we will contact them or let them know about us and ask them to affiliate with our service. It's free to affiliate.
5. Can I register for any occasion, not just weddings?
Absolutely, although this site is geared towards weddings you can create a gift list for 'baby showers', 'birthdays', 'Christmas', anything.
6. How much does it cost to use your service?
Nothing, it is entirely free.
7. How do you make money?
It is completely free for gift list holders, free for anyone viewing a list and buying a gift, and free for any store to affiliate with the Great Gift Registry. We charge stores a small commission on the purchase of gifts that have been registered on this site.
8. Why do you not provide a 24 hour telephone support desk?
Maintaining a 24 hour telephone support desk is expensive and we wish to continue to offer this service free to users. We feel that by making the FAQ area as complete as possible and by answering your questions in writing we can provide more consistent and accurate answers.
9. Why and when should I set up a gift registry?
Setting up a gift registry will make it easier and more convenient for your friends and family to pick out the perfect gift for you. A gift registry can help you avoid duplicate or unwanted gifts, and save you the trouble of having to return unwanted gifts. A gift registry is also a good place to keep track of all the things that you need, but don't necessarily want to purchase right away. You never know when someone might buy it for you.
Typically, you should set up your registry in time to send a registry card out with your invitations. If you are sending out your invitations earlier than 4 months before the event date you might consider indicating to your guests a future date that your registry will become active.
10. Is there a sample registry that I can look at?
Yes, enter the word "sample" when searching for a gift list.
11. How do I register?
You may register by filling out the short on-line form in the 'Start Your List' area of our website.
12. What do you do if a gift I have registered for is out of stock or discontinued?
Unfortunately the Great Gift Registry has no control over the stock of affiliated stores. We recommend that anyone intending to purchase a gift, first call the store to confirm it is in stock.
13. I live outside of Canada, can I still use your service?
Yes, anyone, anywhere can use this service. No affiliated stores in your area? Ask your favorite stores to affiliate with us.
14. Many of my guests are from out of town. Can they purchase gifts in advance of picking them up, or have them shipped?
That depends on the individual store. Most stores will accept a deposit on gifts to be picked up at a later date and some will arrange for shipping, but you must contact the store to be sure.
15. How do I see what my registry looks like to my guests?
Simply search for your list from the site main page and then you can view it the same way as your guests.
16. I have a personal web page. Is it possible to link directly to my registry?
Yes, from the sites main page search for your list from the 'View a List' page. Then when you are looking at the correct list, copy the link from your browser address bar.
17. Is there a way to limit access to my gift registry?
Yes. After you login, click 'Manage a Current Gift List'. At the "Display this gift list to all" option choose the "No, guest login ID required." Your guests will then be required to enter the 5 digit code in order to view that particular list.
18. Can I use a fake name or address on the registry?
No, fake names are not allowed. It is against our policy to use our service for the anonymous solicitation of gifts, and may subject your registry to closure.
19. I am under 18. Can I use your registry?
If you are under 18, please ask your parents to contact us with an address and phone number where we can contact them for verification.
20. How do I find gifts to add to my registry list?
Simply visit and browse through any of our affiliated stores. You can also check out our 'Gift Ideas & Special Offers page'.
21. If I register a donation to a charity, do you send the money directly to the charity, or to me?
The Great Gift Registry doesn't handle any registry transactions. We only supply a link to the charities you would like to donate to. It is up to the gift giver to specify where the money goes.
22. How do I let gift givers know where I am registered?
There are a variety of methods. Here are some ideas:
-Word of mouth -ask your friends to help spread the word.
-Registry cards -you can include a registry card with your invitation or announcement.
-Email -spread the word electronically.
23. What if my guests don't have access to the Internet?
Unfortunately there is no easy alternative for guests without internet access. Our best suggestion is for them to find a friend or family member with internet access. Also, many libraries and cafes have internet access.
24. What if I have to return my gift?
You should contact the merchant and find out their policy on gift returns. Most merchants are happy to exchange the gift or issue store credit. Some merchants allow cash refunds. If you would like the refund to go back to the gift giver, the merchant has the ability to reverse the credit card transaction.
Section B: Starting your Registry list:
25. How do I create gift lists for more than one event?
After you have filled in the registration form you can create multiple lists for as many events as you like. Each list, along with the Event Name will show up when your guests search for your registry.
26. How do I add gifts to my registry?
You can create a new list as well as add, edit or remove gifts from any of your lists, at any time, by logging in to your admin area of our site.
27. Can I allow stores to add items to my registry list?
Yes, after you login, click "Manage a current gift list", then "Allowed Stores". From here you can choose which stores will be able to add items to your current list. If you have more than one registry list, allowing a store access to one list will not give the store access to all your lists. The 'allowed stores' are only able to add items from their store and only edit/remove items that they have added.
28. Can I keep track of how much money is being donated to my charity?
Because the Great Gift Registry does not accept donations on behalf of charities we are unable to keep track of donations.
29. How do I get my favorite charity added to your "Donate to charity" database?
Contact us with the name and contact information of your charity. Only government recognized charities are eligible and the Great Gift Registry reviews all charities before acceptance.
30. How long is my registry list kept in your database?
All registry lists are automatically deleted two weeks after the 'event date' specified by you in the lists 'general information'. If you would like to keep your list for longer, you can change the 'event date' and your list will be kept until two weeks after the new date.
31. How do I control the order in which my gifts are listed in the Gift List?
The gifts are listed in alphabetical order. So if you want a gift to appear first, just add a 1 to the name. For example, "1 - Toaster"
32. Is there a way to add a picture of the gift so my friends will see what I am registering?
Currently there is not. However, we are always looking at ways of improving our site and if we find this to be a desired option, it will be added in a future site revision.
33. What happens if I register for a gift and later decide that I don't want it?
You can remove the gift from your list. If you had requested more than one of a certain gift and one has already been purchased then you can change the "quantity required" so that no additional gifts are purchased.
Section C: Viewing a List / Purchasing a Gift:
34. How do gift givers access a registry list?
Viewing a gift list is simple, just visit our site, and search for a list by name or by the list number (the list number may be supplied by the list holder).
35. What if I can't find the list I am looking for?
The best way to find a list is by using the list #. If you don't know the list # and can't find the list by searching with the name of the list holder, try using only the first few letters of their name. For example: Searching the name "Sm" will show all lists for anyone with a name starting with"Sm" eg. Smart, Smith, Smythe. From there you can choose the correct list.
36. When I try to view a list I am told that I need a "Guest login ID" to view that list.
If the registry holder has enabled this option, you must get a "Guest login ID" from them in order to view their list.
37. Do I have to go to the store or can I purchase a gift online through this website?
All gift purchases must be made through the merchant store.
38. Can gifts be shipped directly to me or to the person that the gift is for?
Shipping depends on the merchant and the type of gift. The only way to know for sure is by contacting the individual merchant. The Great Gift Registry does not handle any purchases or shipping of registry gifts.
Section D: Affiliated Stores:
39. Why should I affiliate my store with the Great Gift Registry?
By affiliating with the Great Gift Registry you will increase traffic into your store, increase your store name recognition and most importantly you will increase sales. For a more detailed description of the advantages of affiliation check out the "Why Should You Affiliate Your Store" explanation on the "Register Your Store" page.
40. Do I need a website or computer knowledge?
The only thing you need to be affiliated with the Great Gift Registry is an email address.
41. What if I don't have an email address?
If you don't have an email address, contact us and we may be able to assist .
42. How much extra work will I have to do by offering your service?
Very little. The only thing that you have to do is check your email every other week and print out any registry lists that you receive from the Great Gift Registry. This email contains the names of the registry holders, and detailed information of each gift including it's own 'purchase confirmation#'. It even has a space for you to keep track of purchase details for your records. Whenever someone purchases an item registered at your store, print that item 'confirmation #' on the receipt.
43. Can I set up my current website so that people can add items to their gift lists online?
Not yet, but we are looking into incorporating this option into our site in the future.
44. Who will see my advertisements?
Advertising thought-out the site is tailored to the person viewing it. Whenever a registry list is created or viewed, the site knows where that list is from and will only show advertising from that area. This insures that the people most likely to shop at your store are the ones that see your ad's.
45. Why are my 'click-throughs' so low compared to impressions?
When someone is navigating through the site, they view an average of between 3 to 15 separate pages and most will visit this site multiple times. This means that one person could be shown your ad more than 50 times. No one can expect that everyone to visit the site will click on their specific ad.
46. How much does affiliation cost?
It is free to affiliate your store. You will only be charged a commission on the purchase of registered items, or if you choose an upgraded advertising package.
47. How are commissions calculated?
A commission rate of 5% is charged to stores when an item registered from that store has been purchased. At the time of purchase, the store is required to supply the buyer with the registered items 'purchase confirmation #'. The buyer will then enter this # along with the quantity purchased and item price before tax in the "Confirm a Purchase" box of the Great Gift Registry website to remove their gift from the registry list. This is the information used to calculate commissions.
48. What if I believe my commissions have been calculated incorrectly.
Stores are asked to keep a sales record of registry items. This can be done easily in the space provided on the registry list sent to the store. In case of a conflict, the store record will be used.
49. How do I pay my commissions?
Payments can be made by cheque or credit card. Pre-authorized payments, as well as one time payments can be set-up in the store admin area. |
